My first week working at TBD brought a lot of new impressions and things to learn, in addition to the “shutdown showdown” and the arrest of a seven D.C. politicians, including the mayor. You don’t get that every day. Here’s a recap in Tweets.
The last week was filled with anxiety of a potential shutdown of the federal government. An estimated 800,000 federal employees have to take unpaid time off, along with other major disruptions to government services. The Cherry Blossom Parade might have been cancelled, too. Not cool, Congress.
Congress hates fun RT @TBD: If the govt shuts down, so would the Cherry Blossom parade http://tbd.ly/gzea6e
Leave it up to Tweeters to make light of this situation with “shutdown pick-up lines.” Check out the best ones that Jeff Sonderman put together for TBD.

In a last-minute deal on Friday, Republicans in Congress and President Barack Obama settled on a compromise that would cut billions but keep the federal government working. Shutdown averted!
The relief was short-lived, though, as D.C. residents discovered details of the compromise. The District wouldn’t be allowed to spend local taxes on abortions for low-income women, a hot-button issue during negotiations; a controversial school voucher program was to be continued; and needle exchanges for drug addicts to be stopped. Tweeted Mayor Vincent Gray:
Anti-DC-autonomy riders on budget bill on abortion rights, vouchers shameful violation of our right to govern ourselves. @DCVote
Gray joined a protest Monday — where he and six city councilmembers got arrested. Twitter users responded instantly, making “Mayor Vincent Gray” a trending topic.

I collected some of the diverse reactions in this Storify piece.
Other stories that received a lot of reaction on Twitter: D.C. will legalize online poker, hoping to raise up to $14 million. Minority women make a lot less money than white men. People in Falls Church are likely richer than you.
